Nail Pull Out Test

Nail pull-out test is a critical field test in soil nailing and rock anchor operations, used to evaluate the load-bearing capacity of nails installed into the ground. This test is performed by applying a controlled axial load to the nail using a hydraulic jack, while measuring the resulting displacement with a dial gauge.

By incorporating pull-out tests into soil nailing or rock anchor projects, structural safety is ensured, the accuracy of design variables is improved, and the risk of failure due to unexpected soil behavior is significantly reduced.

Types of Nail Pull Out Test

Verification Test

Verification tests are conducted during the initial phase of the project on designated nails that are not part of the permanent structure. The nail is subjected to incremental loading until failure occurs. The results of this test provide consultants with critical data regarding the ultimate load capacity and the actual load-deformation behavior of the soil-nail system under real field conditions.

Applications: This test is typically used during design validation or trial phases to refine construction methods, verify soil conditions, and confirm theoretical design assumptions.

Benefits: It ensures that the nail installation method and materials are suitable for site-specific conditions before starting the project, minimizing the risk of failure during actual operations and contributing to overall project reliability.

Nail Pull Out Test

Proof Test

A proof test is carried out after nail installation as part of the quality control process to ensure each nail meets the required load capacity as per the design specifications. The nail is loaded up to a predefined level without causing failure, and its performance is closely monitored.

Applications: This test is performed routinely throughout the project on selected nails.

Benefits: Provides assurance that the installed nails will perform as expected in service, verifies construction quality, and helps identify any deficiencies that need to be addressed before project completion.
